The Grief Recovery Method

The Grief Recovery Method is an action-oriented, evidence-based program designed to help individuals navigate the pain of loss, heal, and regain a sense of purpose and joy in life. Developed and refined over 40+ years, it offers a trusted and effective approach to addressing grief and moving forward after loss.

As a certified Grief Recovery Specialist, I provide a safe and supportive environment where you can explore and resolve the emotions tied to your grief. Whether you’re experiencing loss due to death, divorce, or other life changes, this method offers practical tools and guidance to help you heal and move forward with hope and clarity.

Together, we can work toward lasting emotional freedom.

Grief is the normal and natural response to change or loss of any kind—death, divorce, moving, financial changes, health changes, relationship changes…. Grief is also the result of unmet hopes, dreams, and expectations, and the loss of intangible concepts, such as safety, trust, security, respect, faith, and hope.

Services

Our 8-session support groups offer a safe, evidence-based environment for those who are grieving to take effective and lasting action, no matter the type of loss experienced.

This program is for people who prefer to work one-on-one rather than in a group setting. The 7-session format utilizes the same proven materials as the group programs and can be completed in-person or online.

This 4-session program is designed to teach the necessary tools to parents, caregivers, teachers, and coaches to help children effectively deal with their broken hearts, no matter the loss they are facing.

The loss of a pet can be emotionally devastating. This 6-session program is focused on offering pet owners an effective mechanism for taking action to move through and beyond their grief.

What is grief?

Grief is the normal and natural emotional response to change or loss of any kind—death, divorce, moving, financial changes, health changes, relationship changes, empty nest, retirement…. Grief is also the result of unmet hopes, dreams and expectations, and the loss of intangible concepts such as safety, trust, security, respect, faith, and hope. Everyone experiences grief, and we are often not well prepared to handle, manage, or recover from the emotional impact that results from these changes and losses.

How does The Grief Recovery Method help achieve recovery?

The Grief Recovery Method is a step-by-step process that enables us to unlock and respect the emotional experience of our grief—both the immediate or presenting grief issues, and those that may have been holding us captive for years.

What is The Grief Recovery Method process like? How is it different from other grief support programs?

The GRM is an action-based program that involves reading and writing assignments as outlined in “The Grief Recovery Handbook, the Action Program for Moving Beyond Death, Divorce and Other Losses.”

The GRM is a time-limited program with a set number of sessions, depending on whether one is working through the program one on one with a specialist, or in a group. If done in the group format, it is not a drop-in group, meaning that those who participate attend for the full 8-session program.

What kinds of loss can The Grief Recovery Method help with?

Grief is the process of dealing with loss. While it’s often associated with the sorrow that follows the death of a loved one, grief can arise from any event that disrupts our sense of normalcy or identity, including the loss of meaningful connections.

You might grieve the loss of:

• A loved one, whether a friend, family member, partner, or pet
• A relationship, such as a marriage or close friendship
• A home, neighborhood, or sense of community
• A job, career, or financial security
• A dream, goal, or aspiration
• Health or physical well-being
• Intangible concepts such as safety, trust, security, respect, faith, and hope

Grief can also result from unmet hopes, dreams, and expectations

The Grief Recovery Method programs can help you take steps to move past your losses and find a new sense of hope and purpose.

What does evidence-based mean?

Research conducted by Kent State University has shown that The Grief Recovery Method approach to helping people who are grieving deal with the pain of emotional loss in any relationship is “evidence based” and effective. It is also the only grief support program to have received the distinction of being evidence based! The study documented statistically significant improvements in the participants’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to grief. More information about the research can be found at https://www.griefrecoverymethod.com/evidence-based.

About Dawn Timony

Grief Recovery Method Specialist
Certified by The Grief Recovery Institute

When I found The Grief Recovery Method, I had recently lost my partner to cancer and was alone in a new city struggling with such profound grief. What I didn't understand was that I'd been carrying unresolved grief and loss that had accumulated over my life.

Working through The Grief Recovery Method helped me see the impact of the losses I'd experienced and take steps to work through them. It was a life changing experience that brought me solace, healing, and a renewed sense of hope and purpose.

My mission is to provide a safe environment for people to look at their old beliefs about dealing with loss, which losses have affected their lives, and take actions that will lead them to complete unresolved emotions that may still be impacting their lives and causing them pain.
